Part of The Hague Climate Week
During The Hague Climate Week, in collaboration with Filmhuis and Movies that Matter, we present the critically acclaimed and Oscar-nominated film All That Breathes. This event is part of the Just Peace Movie Nights series, a program that brings important issues around peace and justice to the attention of a wide audience through film and storytelling. After the film screening, we will engage in a conversation with experts on topics such as the rights of nature, environmental law, climate justice, the impact of environmental pollution on biodiversity and the opportunities we as citizens have to take action on this ourselves.
About All That Breathes
The documentary follows brothers Saud and Nadeem, who began caring for injured birds of prey 20 years ago after discovering that the local animal hospital only treated vegetarian birds. Their home is home to dozens of raptors and owls, mostly black kites. These birds populate the city in large numbers, and within the Indian Muslim community it is believed that they are capable of eating trouble. New Delhi, one of the most densely populated and perhaps most polluted cities in the world, nevertheless buzzes with life. In beautifully filmed scenes, animals appear in the most unexpected places, as if they have always belonged there.
The brothers describe how life is constantly experimenting and adapting to changing conditions. For example, birds sing louder to drown out city noise and have discovered that cigarette butts help fight parasites. All That Breathes, by Indian filmmaker Shaunak Sen, is an intriguing and layered documentary about the brothers' rescue efforts in New Delhi, where both animals and humans struggle with the effects of pollution. With humor and wisdom, the two Muslim brothers show how everything in nature - from fungi to humans - is interconnected. Although the city is often considered a living organism, this film makes clear how true that cliché is.
