Keti Koti with Marcha Djoe

  • Date: 01 July 20:15 - 21:30
  • Location: Het Nationale Theater - Koninklijke Schouwburg

Marcha Djoe and her kaseko band together with José Tojo of Kula Skoro bring a theater concert with stories of resistance and resilience and lots of lobi.

Enjoy the storytelling life songs of Marcha Djoe and her formidable kaseko band that will be given extra power by the drummers and dancers of Kula Skoro.

Authentic maroon cuisine preceding the theater concert will be provided by Meeke catering.

Marcha Djoe began her career as lead singer of the Aleke band Masanga 2000. That resulted in a beautiful duet with well-known protest singer Willy Patra titled FRI MI MOE FRI (we must be free because it is our birthright) calling for unity among all Afro-Surinamese.

Over the years, Marcha Djoe emerged as the queen of the Surinamese life song. In the later hit "D'da Anado," she criticizes the African system of polygamy and sings about men who have little to no wealth but still want to have several wives at once.

According to the Aucan singer, it is unacceptable for a man who cannot properly provide for his wife and children to still seek multiple wives. That does not benefit the progress of a nation. That does not benefit emancipation, the singer said. For Marcha, it is ultimately about love, and healing or self-love is an important part of that.
