Dutch Caribbean Book Club: Stories about Otrobanda, New Netherland and slavery

On Saturday, April 6, Dutch Caribbean Book Club is hosting a Dutch Caribbean literary afternoon with writer Maghalie van der Bunt-George as part of Slavery Past Commemoration Year.

Maghalie van der Bunt-George (1973) was born in Delft, the place where her Curaçaoan father studied and married her Dutch mother. She grew up in Curaçao, studied in the Netherlands and after her studies returned to the island of her youth. She is a child of two worlds and feels deeply connected to both countries in the Kingdom. Her debut Oro is Gold reflects the inseparable bond between the people of Curaçao and the Netherlands, and through colorful characters, places and events shines a new light on that shared past.

In this commemorative year of the abolition of slavery and the apology of the Dutch government, this book not only looks back at the past, but also casts a contemporary glance at its impact on the lives of ordinary people today.

During this afternoon, you can also enjoy spoken word and Caribbean music. Afterwards, there will be a book signing with Maghalie van der Bunt-George, and it is also possible to purchase the book during the event.
