How does the colonial past of the Hindustani community in The Hague affect today's society? What influence does that past have on you and your loved ones?

In the period 1853-1939, a total of 74,000 contract workers were brought to Suriname. 47% of them came from what was then the British East Indies and formed the group of Hindostans. After Suriname's independence in 1975, many Hindostans left for the Netherlands where subsequent generations were born.

In the colonial history of this community we find very difficult and painful stories as well as some benefits. In this dialogue we explore the past and how it affects us and society here in the Netherlands. We do that based on our own experiences. How we are aware of that past, how we experience it, whether we want recognition for it or not, what we wish for the future.... your experiences and dreams are welcome.

Our program is as follows:

  • 15:00 Walk-in
  • 15:45 Opening and introduction
  • 16:15 Dialogue in small groups
  • 17:45 Plenary sharing of findings
  • 18:00 Snack and drink
  • 19:00 Closing
