UNESCO Youth Commission presents: How My School Disappeared

  • Date: 19 June
  • Location: Filmhuis Den Haag

On Wednesday evening, June 19, the UNESCO Youth Commission, in collaboration with Filmhuis Den Haag, is organizing an inspiring evening on inclusivity and equity in education. A theme that is and remains of great importance, because unfortunately not every child gets the chance to develop fully. Especially in a multicultural society, we draw strength from diverse talents and in order to discover those talents, children and youth must be given the space to develop themselves at school, regardless of their origin and home situation.

With the screening of the film 'Hoe Mijn School Verdween' (Remy Vlek) about the Aloysius College in The Hague, we want to highlight the added value of multiculturalism. This school profiled itself from an elite Catholic school to one of the most multicultural schools in The Hague, until it had to close its doors in 2015 due to a scathing report by the Education Inspectorate.

Prior to the film, we will engage in a conversation with a panel consisting of experienced politicians, governance experts and young people about the state of equity in education and especially how we can ensure equal opportunities and schools where everyone feels at home in the future. This vision of the future is especially relevant right now, as there is little focus on inclusivity and equity in education in the recently released coalition agreement.

The panel will consist of:

Tweede Kamerlid en voormalig docent geschiedenis Anita Pijpelink (Groenlinks-PvdA),

Voormalig wethouder in Den Haag en Nationaal Coördinator tegen Discriminatie en Racisme Rabin Baldewsingh

Bestuurslid van JobMBO (Jongeren Organisatie Beroepsonderwijs) Rens Brands

Commissielid van de Nationale UNESCO Jongerencommissie Evelien van der Geest
