History
Professor Sir Nigel Rodley was a true human rights icon. When he passed away on 25 January 2017, tributes from all over the world poured in telling incredible stories of how he inspired many, contributed to the legal human rights framework and simply dedicated his life to human rights. Filmmaker Victor Fokke and HRitP director Nadja Houben decided this was the moment to make the documentary ‘The Long Haul’ to pay tribute to Nigel Rodley. The film addresses the current backlash of human rights and how best to respond, and seeks to foster debate and to create a space to think, reflect and strategize on our future.
The Long Haul Initiative is a project, inspired by the film and the human rights legacy that Sir Nigel Rodley left behind. It encourages younger generations to engage in conversations of human rights through art and storytelling. Human Rights in the Picture invites young individuals to submit an artistic creation addressing a human rights issue of their choice. With this project we pass on the torch from Sir Nigel’s generation to the next generation.
