The Kartini Prize is an annual award presented by the municipality of The Hague to a person, group or organisation that is committed to improving the position of girls and women in the city. The aim of the award is to recognise people who stand up for gender equality, emancipation and equal opportunities.

The award is named after Raden Adjeng Kartini, an Indonesian national heroine who stood up for women's rights and education in the early 20th century. Her name symbolises the fight for emancipation, which is also continued in The Hague.

In addition to the honour, winners of the Kartini Prize also receive a sum of money, intended to further support their work or initiative. The municipality uses the award to draw attention to the need for equal opportunities for everyone.

Last year, Joan Biekman won the Kartini Prize, read our interview with her here.
