Dutch New Guinea in "Beeld & Geluid"

  • Date: 08 January 14:00
  • Location: Beeld en Geluid

Sunday, January 8, 2023 is the closing day at the Indonesian Remembrance Centre, in The Hague's Museum Sophiahof, of the exhibition BIAK Stories. BIAK Stories is a project by visual anthropologist Eddy Appels and visual artist and filmmaker Monique Verhoeckx. As part of this, the Audio-visual Anthropological Organisation of the Netherlands / Cineblend, the Indonesian Remembrance Centre, and Beeld & Geluid are organizing this event: Dutch New Guinea.

In the installation BIAK Stories (read here more about this exhibition at Museum Sophiahof), Verhoeckx depicts a secret love story, based on the story of her parents, against the background of the decolonization of Dutch New Guinea. She creates a new narrative through the associative use of historical images and sound material from various archives and from her parents' private collection.

What kind of material do filmmakers use? What stories are behind their material? What do we actually see? And how do the filmmakers use the archival material to tell their own stories? During this afternoon Beeld & Geluid will look at the use of historical images and sound material by filmmakers in telling the history of the decolonization of Dutch New Guinea.
