The 2024 theme: “Getting rights right”

This year's largest event on international cooperation with African countries will focus on the important question, “How do we get rights right?” What does this theme mean and why is it important to discuss it?

When it comes to Africa in the Netherlands, it is often doom and gloom. Often people talk about Africans and not with them. This has to change.

All over the world, human rights are at stake due to war, shrinking civil space, unfair production chains, climate change, discrimination and a growing gap between rich and poor. In African countries, many initiatives are fighting for human rights, but at the same time there are regimes that point to human rights as a mechanism for Western neo-colonialism.

How do we do justice to the initiatives in countries that stand up for democratization and human rights? How can Dutch organizations and activists support existing movements without a Western pedantic finger? This “Getting Rights Right” edition of Africa Day will focus on local solutions and listen to Africans fighting for a more inclusive, just Africa.

Join this conversation, learn and be inspired in the many workshops, at the inspiration market and during the cultural program with music, fashion and dance!
