Everyone has the right to independent, reliable and timely information. People need that information to influence their life circumstances and make the right decisions. Freedom of the press and freedom of information are indispensable in this regard.

That is why Free Press Unlimited supports local media professionals and journalists, especially in countries with limited (press) freedom. They are close to their audience and are the best guarantee for a sustainable, professional and diverse media landscape. We empower them to give people access to the information that helps them survive, develop themselves and with which they can control their governments.

Some examples of our work:

  • Days after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, we launched Media Lifeline Ukraine, a campaign to maintain the flow of reliable information. So far, this campaign has helped nearly 1,000 journalists and set up an editorial team in Poland that supports media still operating in Ukraine.
  • In 2023, Free Press Unlimited's emergency fund Reporters Respond has provided emergency assistance to 1574 journalists by including help with evacuation, safety equipment and psycho-social support.
  • In the fight against impunity, Free Press Unlimited's cold-case team has already investigated more than 15 murders of journalists and uncovered crucial information.
  • We supported the reconstruction of 6 local radio stations destroyed during the conflict in the Central African Republic. Since then, reliable information has found its way to at least 900,000 listeners.
  • On May 3, 2024, Free Press Unlimited will launch its second campaign, "The Erased," which calls attention to the danger of censorship and the hundreds of journalists imprisoned for their work. Read more about it here.
