Between dictatorship and democracy: Greece and the turning point 1974

On Oct. 16, Dr. Patrick Gouw talks about the 1974 political shift that transformed Greece. Greece experienced turbulent decades after World War II. While reconstruction in Western Europe was underway, this southern European country first became embroiled in a bloody Civil War (1944-1949) and was subsequently ruled by a number of oppressive, right-wing regimes.

Political unrest and social divisions surfaced again in the 1960s and culminated in 1967 in a military dictatorship, the so-called “colonel regime,” also known as the Junta. Fifty years ago, democracy was restored in Greece and rapprochement with Europe began. In this lecture, Patrick Gouw outlines the historical context of the Junta years in order to shed more light on the most important episode in modern Greek history.
