This event is organized at the initiative of Dr. Maurits Meijers (Radboud University) and Dr. Mariken van der Velden (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), in collaboration with the Montesquieu Institute and the Documentation Center of Dutch Political Parties.

In democracies worldwide, trust between citizens and politics seems to be under pressure. In the Netherlands, too, distrust in politicians is high and the credibility of political parties is increasingly questioned. In the run-up to the November 22, 2023 parliamentary elections, 'trust' and 'credibility' were central issues. At this meeting, we will discuss the role of credibility of political parties. Have parties actually become less credible or are citizens more demanding? What does this mean for the legitimacy of political representation? How does the participation of parties with distrust as a core identity affect the credibility of the Schoof administration? And what role does the media play in this?

Mariken van der Velden and Maurits Meijers kick off with a brief introduction and insights from recent research. This will be followed by a roundtable discussion led by Dr. Léonie de Jonge, with contributions from journalist and writer Sheila Sitalsing and political reporter Leendert Beekman.

Admission is free but registration is required.
