Panel discussion: Migration issue or migration crisis?

In the summer of 2022, it became clear: migration policy squeaks and creaks. But is this the result of high inflows of immigrants or a result of failing and muddled government policies?

The European Commission is working on a new asylum and migration pact. The so-called Dublin system should be replaced by a new asylum and migration management system in which asylum applications are better distributed among member states. But is this enough or should the European Union intervene more forcefully? And what means does the Dutch government have to intervene itself? In short, is there a migration issue or a migration crisis?

These questions will take centre stage on March 9 during the panel discussion organized by the Montesquieu Institute and the Netherlands Society for International Affairs (NGIZ). During the meeting, Leo Lucassen (professor of labour and migration history at Leiden University), René Peters (Member of Parliament, CDA) and Sophie in 't Veld (Member of the European Parliament, D66) will engage in a conversation led by moderator Jan Rood (president of the NGIZ).
