A little lie can't hurt, but in director Asmae El Moudir's home, more lies were told than truths. In the lively Casablanca neighborhood where she grew up, her domineering grandmother determined everything in the house: the past was hushed up and photographs did not hang. In an attempt to unravel this unsaid history, she rebuilds her neighborhood as a maquette. Together with family and neighbors, she unorthodoxly reconstructs her painful, personal, but also the shared history of Casablanca that has long remained hidden. Bold and creative, “The Mother of All Lies” won two awards at the Cannes Film Festival and was the Moroccan Oscar entry.
