Donald Trump's upcoming presidency is creating geopolitical uncertainty. What is clear is that the American gaze is shifting to Asia and the transatlantic security relationship is no longer a foregone conclusion for Washington.
At the same time, a new world order is emerging before our eyes, and in it Europe is no longer central. The Netherlands, Europe and the West face the challenge of relating to new centers of power such as China, India and Brazil that are pursuing new international rules of the game.
In the week of the annual Ambassadors' Conference, the Netherlands Atlantic Association is organizing a meeting on Monday, Jan. 27, around the complexity of this new world order. Three Dutch ambassadors - based in India, Brazil and South Africa - will share their perspectives. How do emerging countries view the West, how do they respond to changing geopolitical dynamics and what do they expect from the return of Donald Trump?
The meeting will be introduced by Prof. Haroon Sheikh, senior scholar at the WRR and co-author of the report “The Netherlands in a Fragmenting World Order” (Dutch). Geopolitical analyst Alex Krijger will act as moderator.
