Dialogue & Remembrance: Freedom tells - creeping exclusions

  • Date: 04 May 15:00 - 20:00
  • Location: De Grote Kerk

4 May | 15:00 hours - 20:00 hours

During the May 4 commemoration in the Grote Kerk on May 4, we pause around the theme: 'freedom tells: creeping exclusions'.

During the occupation years of World War II, Jews were gradually excluded from public life in the Netherlands and other occupied countries. Beginning in 1940, the occupying forces brought about an administrative separation between Jews and non-Jews. Jews were given a "J" in their identity cards. The next step was that Jews were socially excluded and discriminated against. They were only allowed to go to "Jewish theaters" and "Jewish stores" and were no longer allowed to trade and deal with non-Jews. From 1942, all Jews had to move to a Jewish neighborhood and visibly wear a Star of David on their clothing and risked being rounded up in the streets and sent to concentration camps via transit camps in the Netherlands. Shortly after this period, organized raids and deportation of Jews to concentration camps were initiated where most were killed. The Second World War was characterized by premeditated large-scale, systematic and industrial murder of Jews, Sinti and Roma motivated by ideology and racism.

We think it is important to become aware of the systematic exclusion of groups then and also now. We think it is important that we learn from the past to be stronger in the present. What do we recognize in history? What blind spots do we have and how can we prevent exclusion?

This is our program:
