MAMA JOSES
Singer Songwriter Maame Joses brings you an evening with Nina Simone. A big fan of Nina herself, she has been singing at home and abroad for over 22 years. In 2010 she became a semi-finalist in De Grote Prijs van Nederland and in 2012 in The Voice of Holland. Nina and Maame both started with gospel music in church. Nina's debut album was Little Girl Blue. Maame's was Grown Man Cry.
They both lived in Nijmegen. Like Nina and her daughter Lisa, Maame and her daughter Yael share a musical talent. But they live in completely different times. Or not?
In 2023 she would have turned 90. A good moment to look back together on who she was, what drove her and her many challenges. Her life was at least as intriguing as her versatile music. She hated the term jazz musician. She considered herself more of a folk singer and described her style as black classical music. She fought against racism and for civil rights.
Maame shares stories from the life of Nina Simone and her own experiences as a black singer. Accompanied by master pianist Bouwe Bruins, she sings the well-known and lesser-known songs from her extensive oeuvre.
Nina Simone. Ambitious. Outspoken. Bipolar. She wrote ‘Feelin’ good’ but did not have an easy life. An unparalleled singer and brilliant pianist.
