Good conversations with Lex Bohlmeijer

  • Date: 02 October 12:30 - 14:00
  • Location: Het Nationale Theater

[This event is in Dutch only]
Take a seat in a recliner in a dark room and listen. Lex Bohlmeijer, correspondent good conversations at De Correspondent, is recording a podcast at Theater aan het Spui. He talks to people from politics, arts, journalism and science, who have a special and often unknown story. On Sunday 2 October, Bohlmeijer will talk to Valika Smeulders.

About Valika Smeulders
Dr Valika Terry Smeulders is a Dutch scholar and curator specialising in cultural heritage and the presentation of the colonial past. Multi-voicedness is a recurring theme in her publications and work. From 2017 to 2020, she was curator at the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, where she has since been head of history. Together with three fellow curators there, she developed the much-discussed Slavery exhibition. Smeulders: "For me, it's about the social relevance of history as embodied in the Ghanaian word sankofa: knowledge about the past helps us navigate towards the future."

Bohlmeijer: "I think listening is a wonderful thing. It is very much neglected. We all want to talk, talk, talk. I feel that every human being likes to be perceived by someone else. That is a kind of human right. Listening is an active activity."
